Experience the magic of Arctic Norway on a scenic and cultural journey from Tromsø to the islands of Kvaløya and Sommarøy. Along the way, you’ll enjoy stunning fjord views, meet a Sami reindeer herder, and hand-feed reindeer before gathering inside a traditional lavvo to listen to stories and Joik songs around the fire. Continue to the picturesque island of Sommarøy, famous for its white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, where you can stroll through the local community and enjoy a delicious lunch at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel. With breathtaking landscapes, authentic cultural encounters, and a relaxing coastal atmosphere, this tour offers an unforgettable glimpse into life in Northern Norway.

ITINERARY

Tour Summary: Sami Culture & Sommarøy Experience

  • Departure: From Tromsø with a guided drive to Kvaløya, enjoying scenic views of Arctic fjords and mountains with photo stops along the way.

  • Reindeer Camp Visit: Arrive around 10:30 AM to meet a Sami reindeer herder, hand-feed reindeer, and gather in a traditional lavvo (Sami tent) to enjoy Joik (Sami songs) and learn about Sami traditions.

  • Sommarøy Visit: Continue to Sommarøy, a picturesque island village with white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. Free time to explore the local area.

  • Lunch: Served at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel around 12:30 PM.

    • Typically a soup buffet featuring fish soup, vegetable soup, and bidos (reindeer soup), with bread, butter, dessert, fruit, coffee, and tea.

    • Occasionally, a restaurant menu or full buffet may be offered, including vegetarian and gluten-free options.

  • Return to Tromsø: Depart after lunch, arriving back at Scandic Ishavshotel around 3:15 PM.

NOTES & RESTRICTIONS

  • The tour includes light walking, possibly in snowy conditions.

  • Not suitable for children under 3 years or strollers.

  • Guests with disabilities should inform the organizers in advance for assistance.

  • Safety considerations: The tour involves some walking; the conditions may be icey, slippery, snowy or otherwise. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing. Safety breefing will be given by sami guide in camp regariding reindeers.

  • Additional Safety Considerations relevant for winter season 2020/21: Wandering Reindeer has a duty of care to protect the health and safety of our team, our guests and to do our part are responsible community members. For this reason we have implemented the following standards in all our tours.

  • Please read them before booking, by providing payment you have confirmed that you agree and understand these standards.

  • We reserve the right to cancel the trip if we have less than 4 guests.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS 

  • The meeting time is 15 minutes before departure.

  • Please be on time for departure, missed departures are not refundable.

  • Make sure your travel insurance covers missed/canceled/delayed flights or boats, sickness, and other unforeseen circumstances that may lead to missing the tour.


Any cancellation for individual bookings 48 hours or less before departure time is not refundable. Tours that can not be completed due to the guest not being present at the activity meeting place, are not refundable unless directly caused by the tour provider. We strongly recommend having a travel insurance that will cover your expenses in these cases.
